The Education Partnership Award

For businesses working in partnership with schools to support young people facing disadvantage to succeed in work and life.

 
Educational inequality impacts not only the health, well-being and career options of young people, it also leads to wasted potential at a time when businesses are struggling to recruit people with the skills they need. Schools are under increasing scrutiny to deliver results against various government assessment measures and are expected to play an increasing role in the cohesion of their local community.

These competing priorities mean that responsible business has a vital role to play to ensure schools have the knowledge, partnerships, tools and capacity to prepare young people for success at school and beyond. A diverse workforce is proven to be good for business, therefore business has a role to play in supporting the most disadvantaged young people to build the social capital, skills and competencies which will help level the playing field and create the effective, resilient, skilled and happy workforce of the future.

This year the Education Partnership Award seeks to reward school-business programmes that:

  • Demonstrate partnerships working with the broader school community, in particular, where businesses are working with influencers such as parents, carers and teachers.
  • Engage and/ or supports the development of school leaders to tackle issues such as staff retention, and continuous professional development to enhance educational outcomes for young people and prepare them for future work.
  • Support young people to develop their resilience and adaptability for the changing nature of work.

Criteria

Successful entries will be able to demonstrate that they are:

  • Mutually beneficial: Partnerships should demonstrate clear benefits for both parties as way of ensuring the relationship is sustainable.
  • Targeted: Evidence that the programme engages those who are most in need of intervention(s).
  • Impactful: Evidence that the programme has created a positive and lasting change for the target group, the wider school community and the business.
  • Collaborative: Evidence that the programme is the result of dialogue between schools/young people and businesses to ensure that the needs of schools/young people are at the heart of any solution. Also that it demonstrates the involvement of the broader school community. For example, parents, carers, teachers or the governing body to help embed the programme and its impact.
  • Long term: That relationships have been developed and maintained over a sustained length of time, the award will only recognise partnerships that have been established for over a year.
  • Delivering on the ambition of the 4th Sustainable Development Goal, Education: This will mean working to ensure inclusive and quality education for all. Specifically around the ambition to increase the number of young people that have relevant skills, including technological and vocational skills for employment, resilience, entrepreneurship or accessing good jobs.

Eligibility

This category is open to all members of Business in the Community (BITC), any non-member private sector business, or any organisation that is engaged in BITC’s “Business Class” programme.

  • The business should be entering a programme that goes above and beyond its core purpose.
  •  The entry should focus on impact achieved in the UK.
  • Businesses of any size can enter and will have an equal chance of winning as entries will be assessed against the scoring guide and not against each other.

We recognise that due to the nature of programmes with schools, impact tends to be long-term and it can be difficult to document and assess evidence in the early years. Accordingly, we recommend that applicants have at least a one-year record measuring the benefits for the school(s) and the business, as well as evidence of the processes in place to measure the long-term impact.
